L-3 Nozzlenose sets: Ranked Mode
Splat Zones: Vanilla set
Even with poor coverage per shot, the L-3 has enough ink output to takeover a zone or even to prevent the enemy from taking over. For this, it needs to use its range and strafing speed to fend off short ranged painters while saving Curling Bombs to scare off midrange slayers.
The L-3 is not a slayer weapon, even with Burst Bombs. When confronted at the zones, best to pull back while tossing a cooked Curling Bomb to cut as much area from your foe. Keep shooting to prevent a takeover, and force others to commit to an attack. Zone, then eliminate.
Crab Tank follows this defensive ideal and mostly holds grounds or tests anchors. It's a special worth building around, so occasionally toss Curling Bombs in occupied territory for meter gain. In that respect, playing L-3 is similar to a more defensive take from the Splash-o-matic.
Tower Control: L-3D set
Burst Bombs become essential to target opponents on the tower or who've taken the high ground. This is a stalling tactic foremost: you have neither the range nor the mobility to approach midrange units.
Your role is mainly that of denial. Outrange enemy painting units and deny their turf advantage, or deny anchors map control through Burst Bomb spam. Those bombs are also useful in creating distance against dedicated midrange slayers.
Ultra Stamp is your dedicated tower clearing move, an assault tool at checkpoints and a good way to break through a congested area. It allows you to go on offense and start moving towards areas where defenders would set up. When the special is over, you'll have gained huge positional advantage.
Rainmaker: Vanilla set
Your Barrier DPS is dismal and you're a bit underpowered for a slayer. Nonetheless, you should attempt to circle the Barrier and engage enemies trying to free the Rainmaker. At the very least, Curling Bombs get you at the action faster so as to evaluate options.
Curling Bombs have defensive and offensive uses. They ink your feet, a useful property when defending a position, and their lethal damage means they scare midrange slayers off-balance. Cook them for an even greater blast radius at checkpoints using the Rainmaker stand as cover.
From a middle position, you should easily gain meter for a Crab Tank, an all-purpose firing platform that'll prevent you from overextending. Never rush forwards, but let your Curling Bomb draw paths.
Clam Blitz: L-3D set
I promote the L-3D set in Clam Blitz uniquely because Burst Bombs are more versatile and less ink hungry for this chaotic game mode. Curling Bombs offer movement options, but I'd prefer a more methodical approach as the L-3 can't defend itself when surprised.
Here, Burst Bombs can be freely used to improve your DPS against other clam gatherers and forward painting units. They're a noncommittal poke handy against targets a Curling Bomb couldn't reach. They remain an anchor harassment tool first and foremost.
Ultra Stamp can be seen as a general purpose clearing device, best saved to recover dropped Power Clams. It's the ideal slaying weapon for a main that lacks power and mobility due to broken ink patterns. Don't charge guarded basket lines: toss your hammer instead.
