Splattershot Nova sets: Ranked Mode
Splat Zones: Vanilla set
This requires some forward thinking. Your main is one of the best weapons adapted towards painting the zone. Opponents will not approach you head on. You don't need to safeguard the progress with Ink Mines. You need to be wary of potential flankers with Point Sensors.
Problems arise when there are multiple zones. You're not well suited to offense or pushing, so concentrate on following your assault units and paint in their wake, while keeping an eye out for any flankers. You might think you're zone painter but you're actually flanker watch.
Surprisingly, Killer Wail 5.1 is not for spotting additional threats but to offer fire support. It gives cover fire when you want to push forwards and takeover new territory. If you tag someone with a few shots, you can activate the Wail to finish them off.
Tower Control: Annaki set
Outwardly, the Nova provides paint support in Tower Control, producing swimming ground for teammates. In actuality, you take every opportunity to slip behind the tower or an obstacle to lay an Ink Mine. Hopefully, amidst the chaos of battle, someone will slink to a corner and trigger your trap.
The trick is to never make a target of yourself. Don't Ink Mine too aggressively, or if you must, follow behind a teammate. The purpose is to whittle down the enemy advance by punishing their offense, and help your team by painting so they can fight off the hard defenses.
Ink Jet is a more powerful punishment tool to finish off those who triggered Ink Mine. Activated from behind cover, it can surprise and challenge rear line snipers and greatly help the tower's advance. More importantly, it's a solid counter against the front line fighters who haven't fallen for your traps.
Rainmaker: Annaki set
With poor barrier DPS and more paint than damage per shot, the Nova doesn't do much in the neutral situation except paint the field and maybe intimidate players at range. Strafe around the barrier in search of targets and seek to attract slayers into your Ink Mines.
As with most other game modes, the Nova is defined by its special. Ink Jet greatly increases your offensive capabilities, necessary in fast-paced Rainmaker. More powerful although riskier than Killer Wail; it's the better special for letting your Rainmaker carrier push forwards, or quickly stop an enemy Rainmaker user.
The key is in not being to aggressive and laying cover on what threats you perceive at a distance. If you can have your opponents fear the Ink Mine, then you finally bring offensive options for the rest of your team as you keep painting and build meter safely.
Clam Blitz: Vanilla set
Painting and controlling enemy movement with Point Sensor is much of the gameplan, hampered by the fact that the Nova is no slayer. The intent is to discourage forays from front line painters into your territory by bringing the whole team against them. You need to add your own fire support into this to ensure splats.
Most of your time will be spent building meter for repeated Killer Wail 5.1 in a strategy similar to that of the Sploosh-o-matic Neo. But whereas that weapon is infinitely more mobile and able to seed Squid Beakons ahead, you merely stay on the front lines keeping the enemy in check with more Point Sensor.
Prioritize targeting anchor units with Killer Wail 5.1 and eliminating them. With the backline dealt with, the movement of frontline elements is easier to control. You are barely a clam collector, with general painting being a goal in itself to farm special which turns into your major form of offense.
